Gesabakwa, Ogembo, Kisii County – June 16th 2025- the Gesabakwa Elderly Care Initiative proudly joined communities across Kenya and globally in observing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). This significant day, recognized by the United Nations, is a crucial reminder of our collective responsibility to safeguard the rights and well-being of older persons, especially right here in Ogembo.
We marked WEAAD with a heartfelt gathering, celebrating the incredible wisdom, resilience, and enduring spirit of our beloved elders from the Gesabakwa community. Their life experiences and strength profoundly inspire our daily work at the Gesabakwa Elderly Care Initiative. It was a deeply meaningful day, reaffirming our commitment to ensuring their golden years are characterized by comfort, security, and the profound respect they deserve.
Why WEAAD Matters in Kisii
Elder abuse, in any form – be it physical, emotional, financial, or neglect – is a grave violation of human rights. In communities like Gesabakwa, Ogembo, raising awareness is paramount to preventing such abuses and fostering an environment where older persons feel safe, valued, and empowered. WEAAD provides a vital platform to:
- Educate: Inform our community about the various forms of elder abuse and how to recognize them.
- Prevent: Promote local strategies and community initiatives that reduce the risk of abuse.
- Respond: Encourage the reporting of suspected abuse and ensure victims receive the necessary support and protection.
- Celebrate: Highlight the invaluable contributions of elders to our society and promote healthy aging for everyone in Kisii County.
